When Trust Takes Time: Supporting the Shut-Down Horse

Some horses react with aggression. Others shut down.

Both are responses to pressure. Both are ways of saying, I do not feel safe.

But the quiet ones—the horses who seem to accept anything, who say, Do what you want, I will survive—can be the hardest to reach. Because from the outside, they look “obedient.” Yet inside, they are still bracing. They are surviving. And for many of them, it has been this way for a long time.

So what can we do?

We begin by slowing down. We begin by doing less. Often, far less than we think. In one of Piet's youtube videos, we hear the story of a shut-down horse who was suspicious of even the simplest interaction. Just a rope brought panic. But when the pressure stopped—when the human simply mirrored the horse’s behaviour, standing quietly and eating beside him—something shifted.

Trust needs space. For this horse, it began in the corner of a paddock, when he was offered nothing but peace. No pressure. No expectations. Just time, presence, and breath.

It is not easy work. Especially when we want something to change. When we feel that urge to fix the problem or move things forward, horses feel that pressure immediately. And often, they pull away.

But when we learn to control our own state of mind—to let go of the wanting, even just for a moment—we open the door for connection.

It may take time. It may take tears. But it is worth it.

Our course, Introduction to the World of the Horses, teaches this kind of presence. It is not about fast fixes or complicated techniques. It is about seeing what is really happening between you and your horse—and learning to respond in ways that build trust, not tension.

And because the course is under two hours long, you can complete it in one sitting, from anywhere in the world—even from your phone.

Because when you change your state of mind, you change everything about your relationship with your horse.
